It was an epic moment and her hair shined bright with diamonds. And let’s not forget the throwback beads her beautiful daughter Alexis Ohanian wore to the game. We certainly can’t forget how well and beautifully she cheered for her mom. “The daughter for mother cheer”, as I like to call it, is now immortalized as a meme and its cuteness will live on forever.

But perhaps the only part we can’t truly forget was how emotional Serena Williams was when she said goodbye to the sport, and it makes you wonder whether she’s truly ready to let it go.

Serena Williams – Talks “Giving So Much Of” Her Life To Tennis

The tennis legend and her big sister Venus Williams chatted with actor Bradley Cooper at the A&E Networks and the History Channel’s Talks in Washington D.C. this weekend.

Bradley Cooper, 49, who served as an interviewer asked Serena Williams about her retirement plans after her announcement in August that she’ll be leaving the game behind to move on to other pursuits. This September at the U.S. Open would likely be the last time that Serena, a 23-time Grand Champion, would play professionally again.

“I just needed to stop,” Serena, 40, explained, according to Variety. “I always said I wanted to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players. For me, it’s really about things I want to do spiritually and spending time with my daughter and family.”

“As a super hands-on mom, I can’t tell you how hard it was. I lost so many matches after I had [daughter] Olympia because it was so hard to be on the court,” she continued. “I feel like I’ve given so much of my life to tennis, my entire life, that it’s time to do something different for me and also work on other things.”

She then explained that her retirement doesn’t mean she won’t ever play the game again, but that she’s stepping back from the game for a while.

Serena Williams – On Her Contributions To the Game Of Tennis

Serena Williams has spent more than half of her life playing tennis professionally, and mostly winning. Her retirement from the game created a buzz that rippled the internet for days. Twitter even created Serena’s very own emoji to commemorate that day.

Speaking on how she and her sister have contributed immensely to the game for several years, Venus said: “For me, I want to do more. You want to be better every moment. It’s never enough. If it was perfect, it still wasn’t perfect enough.”

Serena then added: “When you’re on the inside, you can’t see it. It’s completely different when you’re involved.”
