Shakira’s tax evasion case has reportedly been reopened, and it’s coming at a critical time for the singer who just moved her family stateside following her public breakup with ex-partner Gerard Piqué.
According to the filings, the “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker owes the Spanish government $13.2 million in taxes when she lived there in 2012, 2013, and 2014. NBC News reported that the authorities are saying this new investigation relates to taxes from the 2018 fiscal year.
Shakira – Is Not Bothered About the Spanish Government Reopening Tax Evasion Case
For several years, the Colombian songstress lived with her ex Gerard Piqué and their two sons in Spain, during which time she claimed she followed expert advice when it came to her tax reports.
However, authorities in Barcelona are saying otherwise, as they claim the singer deliberately avoided paying huge sums in taxes during that time.
Shakira will be going to trial soon over her 2012-2014 tax case, though a date is yet to be set. This is not the first time that the Latin artist has been accused of defrauding the government of Spain, but this one is understood to be more serious.
On Thursday, July 20, even though the singer was yet to receive a formal notification of the Prosecutor’s complaints, her spokesperson issued a statement saying, “[she] will not make any comments until the notification reaches them through the official and legally established channels. She must be notified personally at her new address, in strict accordance with the provisions of the Law.”
“Shakira defends having always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts. She is now focused on her life as an artist in Miami and is confident that there will be a favorable resolution of her tax issues,” her PR team continued.
This will understandably inconvenience Shakira, who just moved to Miami with her sons and is dedicated to building her life and her artistic career there.
This is not the first time that the Spanish government has accused high profile figures who have lived in the country of evading taxes, though in Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo’s case, they were found to be guilty, even though they were not sentenced to prison.
