Shania Twain – Talks About Her Journey To Recovery On Latest Interview
“Queen Of Me” is almost here, and to country legend Shania Twain, it means a lot of things. The singer has come to terms with accepting the uncertainty of life, the fact that one day she might have to hang up her hat as a singer and focus on songwriting, but mostly, the fact that she’s in charge of making decisions about what affects her most in life.
In her interview with TalkShopLive, the star discussed the important decision that made her press play on her life-altering surgery, her recovery process, and her uncertain future as a vocalist.
In 2003, Twain contracted Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness that she believes caused dysphonia.
Not wanting to give up on her music career, the star underwent multiple surgeries. Following the series of invasive procedures, Twain worked on coming to terms with losing the voice she’s been known and loved for by millions of fans worldwide.
She sought therapy to help her scale the hurdle and relearn how to use her “new” voice. For her, this new album signifies change and bravery in the face of so many uncertainties.
“For me, this album means so, so much about my decision-making and the courage to get the operation, know that I may never even be able to sing again after the surgery,” she told the outlet. “So, that was a big decision.”
While recording, Twain was invested in pushing past her boundaries in order to find a new normal for her voice.
“Every day that I was recording, I was testing the new voice,” the “You’re Still the One”. “Getting on the mic in the studio, it’s vulnerable. You can’t drown it out with production or a band or mixing or anything like that until much, much later on.”
Shania Twain – On Continuing To Be Involved In the Music Industry
Shania Twain also revealed that she wrote “four albums worth of music” during the last four years and that “Queen of Me” is just one of the many albums she’s planning on releasing.
“Historically for me, vocal-performance wise – absolutely,” she noted. “What’s even more precious to me is that I don’t know if the procedure that I had will last forever.”
“With age, it could just not hold up, and that could be it,” Twain said about the operation, acknowledging that she may be forced to make tough decisions about her career down the line. “I’ll have to make another decision. I will do the operation again or not? Do I just now write music for other people’s albums at that point? I will gladly do that, and, again, it will be another decision that I will have to make as the queen of me. Some decisions are tougher than others.”
