Sharna Burgess is opening up about a side of motherhood that’s not often talked about. While there’s a great joy associated with childbirth, there are also natural fears that come with raising the child. For Sharna Burgess, the fears do overtake her at certain times and she’s still struggling to reel it in.
Sharna Burgess – Speaks Up About Intrusive Mom Fears
In June this year, Sharna Burgess welcomed her first child.
This week on Instagram, the star decided to recap her experiences as a first time mom.
The 37-year-old dancer shared a video of herself holding close to her infant son while walking down the stairs.
In the post’s caption she detailed all the fears she’s fought to come to terms with since becoming a mom.
“Intrusive mom thoughts…” the Dancing with the Stars pro began. “This is a real thing. Honestly I thought it was something wrong with my brain at first.”
She then explained what she meant by intrusive mom thoughts by continuing: “These super dark thoughts of all the things that could go wrong. All the ways I or life could accidentally hurt my baby. Falling down [the] stairs holding him, sickness, a car accident.. the list is long but I won’t share it. If you know you know.”
The best thing about coping with these “super dark thoughts five months in” is that she’s realized that she’s not alone. She then detailed leaving the hospital in “pain”, “sleep-deprived” and “emotionally charged” after childbirth, and knowing she now has a big “responsibility”.
This new responsibility, according to Burgess, is “filled with love, wonder and awe,” but what nobody talks about is the “fear that now lives within you.”
However, she went on to list the ways new mothers can get past this experience.
Sharna Burgess – On How To Conquer “Intrusive Mom Thoughts”
Sharna Burgess also shared the ways new mothers can rise above these fears.
Her first tip reads: “Deep cleansing breaths taking in as much air as you can and hold as you say ‘I release all thoughts that do not serve me’ then control that breathe out imagining those words and the feeling they bring leaving you. Repeat repeat.”
In another tip, Burgess wrote, “When I need a quicker fix I physically swipe my hand in front of my eyes and say ‘no; and imagine that image being destroyed and gone. I shake it off and call in a memory that I can’t wait to make with Zane. All of the firsts that he has coming.”
She then told new mamas out there that they’re doing a great job of caring for their little ones.
