Sharon Stone Pitched This “Barbie” Idea That Got Her Thrown Out of A Studio

Long before Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” started taking shape, actress and philanthropist Sharon Stone had pitched for a movie featuring the iconic doll. The difference is that hers was not so warmly received.

Sharon Stone – Says Studio Execs Didn’t Want A “Powerful” Barbie

Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” was mostly all we could talk about last year, so much so that if you hadn’t seen it, you weren’t considered cool.

So now we’ve got a Barbie that challenges stereotypes and male roles in the society, and it’s a billion-dollar win for Warner Bros, but Sharon Stone had conceived a similar idea a few years back and no one wanted to listen to her.

“I went to the studio to try to make ‘Barbie’ in the 90s with a producer friend of mine and I had the then-CEO of Mattel on our side,” she shared. “Literally, we got thrown out of the studio.”

According to Stone, their thinking at the time was “‘Why would you take this American icon and want to destroy it? Like, what is wrong with you?’ I mean, I got a lecture and an escort to the door.” Stone went on to describe the opening scene to her pitch, where Barbie shows up at Mattel headquarters in a grand car.

“And then Secret Service come out and their feet are as big as the car. They escort her into Mattel and everybody falls aside because she’s the most important member of Mattel,” Stone said.

“And how all the big people are chasing her around and kissing her ass because she’s the queen of Mattel, and about the power of being Barbie and what Barbie could do in the world because she was so powerful,” she continued. “No, they didn’t think Barbie should be powerful.”

She went on to reveal that the studio execs that booted her and her idea out in the ’90s are no longer there.

“If they’re still alive, they probably think, ‘I hate her,’” she said.

Stone previously hinted that she had developed an idea for a live-action Barbie several years ago when she commented on a post by “Barbie” star America Ferrera and said she was laughed out of the studio for her own version of “Barbie.”
