Shenseea is a Jamaican born dancehall artist that has steadily been on the rise, and over the course of 5 years has collaborated with big mainstream artists such as Christina Aguilera, Sean Paul and others.
Recently, Shenseea gave an exclusive interview for E! News series “Ones to Watch” which celebrates Black History Month. She told E! that she felt she had no one sound that could define her, and that she thinks of herself as a chameleon that can adapt sounds of other artists she admires.
One thing she admits is that her songs are always upbeat and energetic and that they speak the truth. Speaking on her songs and her writing process she says, “It speaks truth because I normally try to write about what I’m going through or somebody else is going through. Because I like to write music that people can relate to. When they hear it, I feel like I’m talking to them.” Also adding, “I’m just doing it from the heart, honestly.”
Shenseea And How She Gets By Day By Day
Another major thing she talked about in the interview were the two things that keep her happy every day. She admitted that she prays at the end of every day and that her son and God have been the two things that her world revolves around. She called her son the biggest thing that motivates her to write songs, and that she was proud to have him as a big fan of her music.
She also talked about breaking the mold she felt female performers had to deal with in contrast to male performers, because she felt that most times female performers were forced to ‘act like strippers on stage’, and she thought that performance could also be about the voice.
She Doesn’t Want To Be The Next Rihanna Anymore
With over 5.7 million followers on Instagram, and signing with the major record label Interscope Records on 2019, with a debut album she hopes would be released later this year, it wouldn’t be a wonder if she turned out to be the next Rihanna. But according to Shenseea, it was something that she no longer obsesses about. She admittedly said that she used to dream about being the next Rihanna when she was younger, but growing up she began to change her ideals and is now trying to be the best version of herself.
While she admits that Rihanna is a big inspiration and one of her favorite musicians ever, she is trying to make her own sound and have people recognize her for being herself and doing what she wants, not what other people want for her.

Shenseea Can’t Be Put In A Box
She also spoke out about being able to perform songs that have diverse genres from R&B, Hip Hop to Reggae. She said that though she knows she might be very good at Dancehall, it wouldn’t keep her from exploring any other genre she vibes with. She doesn’t want to be known for one style or be defined as a dancehall or pop artist. She wants to be known for being everything.
