Halle Bailey suffered at the hands of critics for playing the red-haired and pale-skinned Ariel in the Disney live-action remake, but I think Rachel Zegler’s takes the cake.
Many argue that they’re not being color biased in their argument, but simply choosing to acknowledge that the original animated movie mentioned the principal protagonist – Snow White – having a skin that is as white as snow.
To add to the ongoing chaos is Rachel Zegler making certain comments that fans believe is “woke.” She called the prince “a stalker” and claimed her character’s name has nothing to do with color in the upcoming live-action version. Her take on politics and gender representation were also topics that sparked criticisms from fans.
Fans React To West End Revival Casting News
Rachel Zegler’s casting in what will become her first UK stage debut has been met with mixed reactions. The Colombian-American actress was tapped to play the titular role of Eva Peron at the London Palladium musical, being directed by Jamie Lloyd.
While some praised the casting choice, others weren’t so sure she should be playing the role of the poor Peron who rose from poverty to become one of the most powerful women in Latin America.
“When does she start dissing Argentinians?” one fan jokingly asked, with another adding, “Hasn’t she bankrupted enough productions by now?”
Rachel Zegler Candidly Reacts To Landing the Lead Role In the West End Revival
Despite what fans might think, Zegler considers herself lucky to have been cast in the stage production, saying, “Evita has been such an important musical to me since I was a little girl, when my dad and I would sing Don’t Cry for Me Argentina together on my back patio.”
She added: “The opportunity to bring Jamie Lloyd’s singular, visionary ideas to life onstage is an honour unlike any other. The stage has always felt like home to me, and I can’t wait to make my West End debut in such great company.”
Director Lloyd was also happy to have Zegler on and said so. He gushed: “I am so excited to be collaborating with the brilliant Rachel Zegler on Evita. She is a phenomenal talent, and I am delighted she will be making her West End debut as the iconic Eva Peron.”
Zegler originally made her Broadway debut in 2024 starring in ‘Romeo And Juliet’ alongside Kit Connor. However, she made her mark when she played Maria in West Side Story, a role for which she won a Golden Globes.
