Steve Harvey, the 67-year-old beloved host of Family Feud, recently found himself at the center of an AI-related death hoax.
Chaos ensued online after a story titled “Steve Harvey Passed Away Today: Remembering The Legacy of a Comedy Legend” was published on Trend Cast News.
Details About The ‘Death Hoax’ Article
The article, curiously dated December 19, 2024, eventually appeared on Newsbreak, a platform known for aggregating news from various sources.
The misleading report, which remained live on Newsbreak for some time, sparked widespread confusion. The Wrap speculates that the erroneous story might have been generated by artificial intelligence, leading to its future publish date and questionable authenticity.
As the rumors gained traction, concerned fans took to social media to express shock and confusion. Harvey, however, indirectly addressed the ordeal through an inspirational post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“When you feel like giving up.. DON’T When you thinking bout giving up.. DON’T When it look like you ain’t gone make it.. KEEP GOING.”
While the post did not directly reference the death hoax, it failed to prevent speculation from spreading further. Comments such as “Steve Harvey dead?” and “They’re saying Steve Harvey dead” flooded X, highlighting the chaos caused by the fabricated news.
Public Backlash And Calls For Accountability
The incident drew criticism towards Newsbreak, with some users attributing the spread of the falsehood to a “virus” on the platform. One user commented:
“Woke up to a notification that Steve Harvey died, went on ‘X’ only to find out it was a virus. Sure enough the virus was on my phone too. That Newsbreak app is beginning to be a problem.”
Others suggested legal action, with one user writing:
“I don’t care for this dude but I hope he catches wind of this article and sue whoever wrote this article,” one user on Newsbreak wrote, per The Wrap. “You basically wished death on that man out here lying on that man’s soul like that. Ain’t that a [bitch].”
In response to the controversy, a Newsbreak spokesperson apologized, stating:
“Our team investigates any content flagged as harmful or misleading and acts swiftly to remove anything that violates our Community Standards.”
A Recurring Issue with AI and Fake News
This isn’t the first time Steve Harvey has been the subject of a death hoax. Similar rumors circulated in October, claiming he died in a car crash, while earlier in 2023, a false report led Harvey to post a humorous reaction photo captioned, “Me seeing that Rip Harvey is trending.”
The rise of AI-generated content has posed new challenges for platforms like Newsbreak, which have previously faced backlash over similar incidents, including a fabricated report about a mass shooting in New Jersey.
