Taylor Swift is finally at that point in time when she can address the traumas of the past. And why not? She came out on top, after all.
Taylor Swift Opens Up About Kanye West’s Vulgar Lyrics Feeling Like A Career Death
Taylor Swift has got a “big reputation.” But it has very little to do with the 2016 incident where Kanye claimed he could get in her pants because he made her famous.
The controversial lines actually ran like this, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that b—h famous.”
For a year after this incident, people rarely heard from Taylor Swift, and in her cover interview with TIME, she admitted that it was one of the lowest points of her career.
“Make no mistake — my career was taken away from me,” she told the publication. “That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before.”
At the height of the controversy, Kim Kardashian added fuel to the fire when she released an edited version of their phone call, making it seem like Taylor Swift had approved nasty lyrics about her own self.
At the time, people called her a clout chaser and accused her of being capable of doing anything for the sake of fame.
She continued, “You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar.”
“That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before,” the “Karma” singer continued. “I moved to a foreign country. I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard.”
One thing she feared the most was that the controversies were big enough to define the rest of her career. “I thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life,” she said, adding, “I’m very careful to be grateful every second that I get to be doing this at this level, because I’ve had it taken away from me before.”
In 2020, Taylor Swift was named artist of the decade, and three years later, she’s still scaling to new heights when it comes to her fame.
This year alone saw her get named Times’ Person of the Year, Billboard’s top artist of 2023, top global artist for both Spotify and Apple Music, Forbes‘ fifth-most powerful woman in the world and People‘s most intriguing person of the year.
“Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.”
