Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd, will be stepping into a whole new playing field by starring in his first ever movie as a main character. The script is based on an original idea from The Weeknd.
The Weeknd – Develops New Idea And Brings Trey Edward Shults To Direct
The Weeknd is teaming up with “Waves” director Try Edward Shults for his first ever feature film. The currently untitled project will be starring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
At the moment, plot details for the project are still under wraps even as it has entered production. Shults will be directing the movie, which he co-wrote with the Weeknd and his producing partner Reza Fahim.
Executive producers on the project include Shultz and Ortega, with The Weeknd, Fahim, Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss among the producers.
The Weeknd has been working on the project for years and only brought in Shultz in recent months, and they proceeded to write the script alongside Fahim.
Later on, they would get the script into the hands of Ortega and Keoghan who will choose to commit to the project even though they had a number of offers on the table for them to consider.
Besides landing Ortega and Keoghan, Shults and Tesfaye were also able to bring on Chayse Irvin (Blonde) as the director of photography. Composer and producer OPN, aka Daniel Lopatin (Good Time, Uncut Gems), will be scoring the film alongside The Weeknd.
While this is set to be Tesfaye’s first dip into acting as a main character in a feature film, the “Blinding Lights” singer and songwriter previously made a cameo appearance as himself in “Uncut Gems“. He will star in HBO’s “The Idol”, which he also co-created with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Fahim also is a co-creator on the series.
