The Weeknd Wants Nothing To Do With The Grammys

Following a shocking snub from this year’s nominations, the “Blinding Lights” singer who called out the awards for alleged corruption and lack of transparency has said in a statement to New York Times that he wants no part in the awards again despite winning three awards at the ceremony in the past.

The statement which he put on Thursday read, “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.” A rep said the singer – real name Abel Tesfaye- has no further comment on the matter.

In response to The Weeknd’s statement, Harvey Mason Jr., interim president of the Recording Academy which oversees the Grammys, said , “We’re all disappointed when anyone is upset, adding, “But I will say that we are constantly evolving. And this year, as in past years, we are going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”

The singer’s latest statement follows a string of comments he has made against the awards show after he failed to pick up a single Grammy nod for his critically acclaimed “After Hours” album, which includes Top 100 hits “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless.” After his shutout from the nominations in November he tweeted – garnering over a million likes- “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.”

The R&B singer who called it as the biggest snub in recent memory during an interview with Variety, went onto describe this year’s nominations as a “sucker punch” and an “attack in an interview with Billboard.

He said, “It just kind of hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt… I felt things. I don’t know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion. I just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’ We did everything right, I think. I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I was going to get nominated. The world told me. Like, ‘This is it; this is your year.’ We were all very confused.”

However, his confusion seems to have faded to be replaced by nonchalance since then, with him opening up about his indifference for the awards show in an interview this January. He said, “I personally don’t care anymore,” continuing, “I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again.”

In 2015, The Weeknd took home the Grammys for Best R&B performance for “Earned It” and Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Beauty Behind The Madness” in 2015 followed by a win for Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Starboy,” in 2017 quipped “I suck at giving speeches anyways… Forget awards shows.”
