We’re still a good many days away from Christmas and yet one of his songs, now considered a Christmas classic, has made a bold return to the charts.
John Lennon and Widow Yoko Ono Return To the Charts In Time For the Holidays
How many days old were you when you learned that John Lennon performed a Christmas song? The merry tune is titled “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” and it has so far become a part of our Christmas tradition that it returns to the charts nearly every year.
This year, however, he returns on both the Official Streaming chart and the main ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.K. with the song.
It lands at No. 67 on the streaming list, and much lower on the general songs tally, as it occupies the 92nd spot. The song lists Yoko Ono and John Lennon as its primary contributors, with vocals from the Harlem Community Choir.
Lennon officially became the first Beatle to release a Christmas song after the breakup of the band when he released “Happy Xmas (War is Over).
He once joked that he wrote the song “because I was sick of White Christmas,” but it also doubles as a powerful message against the Vietnam war, which was ongoing at the time.
Prior to its release, he and Yoko had already been spreading the message “WAR IS OVER! If You Want It – Happy Christmas from John & Yoko” on posters and such around the world.
The song has a powerful message that urges us to stop racism, fighting, and to stand together to have a “great Christmas.” Whatever the social class or standing, it’s always nice when we come together to celebrate, because then it becomes more special and more beautiful.
“So this is Christmas / And what have you done? / Another year over / And a new one just begun,” Lennon sings in the first verse, before leading into a chorus that’s made even more emotional through the voices of dozens of little children singing together.
As we go deeper into the Christmas season, there’s no doubt that this song will keep making its way up on the charts. “Another year over, a new one just…” complete the lyric. Pop quiz: which famous artist covered the song? Hint: she’s also know for singing, “A New Day Has Come.”
