Tom Cruise doesn’t see any reason to take a break. And so amid the 61-year-old actor’s publicity rounds for his newest movie, Cruise also teased the plot for a future one. However, the upcoming film’s setting won’t resemble any of its predecessors.
Find out what Tom shared about his future film plot. And learn what makes it so different. Get all the details below.
Tom Cruise Wants To Film In Outer Space!
No mission actually seems impossible to Tom Cruise. And so after all his death-defying film stunts, the actor decided to set a new goal for his next film: Space.
But Cruise refused to reveal much about his plans to film in outer space amid his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere. However, the 61-year-old did share that his team has begun “working on it diligently” via People.
“We’ll see where we go,” added Cruise. However, NASA actually has offered more teasers than Tom about the project. For instance, in 2020, a report revealed that the actor wanted to consider outer space for an upcoming film. And NASA director Jim Bridenstein expressed enthusiasm.
“NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station!” gushed Bridenstein. And he added, “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.” But that led to Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, wanting to join the team. “Should be a lot of fun!” Musk tweeted.
Tom Cruise Will Take ‘The World To Space’
And thus far, Cruise has tapped Doug Liman as his director. The duo teamed up for Edge of Tomorrow in 2014 and American Made in 2017. But Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley actually spilled more than Tom about the film. And Langley shared, “I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space.”
Because of the company’s development project, Langley revealed that the “great plan” calls for Cruise to make history. “That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that,” she said. And the film company exec envisions Cruise “taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the Space Station.”
Cruise actually pitched his film project during the pandemic over a Zoom call, according to Langley. And budgeted at $200 million, the movie will primarily take place on earth. But the film company exec explained that the plot calls for Cruise’s character to “save the day” by heading into outer space.
“During the pandemic he asked for a Zoom call with us and got onto the call,” recalled Langley. And Cruise said, “Guys, I’ve got this great project and here it is. The majority of the story actually takes place on Earth. And then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”
