The little we’ve seen of “Dead Reckoning Part One” is enough to tell us that the stars engaged in death-defying stunts, with wires and all the safety stuffs, of course, but still. In fact there’s a particular scene of Cruise driving off a cliff in a bike that’s been making waves and popping up as memes all over the internet.
Hayley Atwell, though being a newcomer to the “Mission: Impossible” family, is not a stranger to action and violence in movies in the past. I mean, what can top the “Avengers: Endgame” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” level of action and violence? Okay, “Squid Game” did but only by mistake.
However, she appreciated the level of support Cruise gave her during the filming of the latest addition to the hit franchise.
Hayley Atwell Says She Trusts Tom Cruise “Implicitly” Even When Performing Dangerous Stunts
Tom Cruise has quite a reputation for doing all, emphasis on “all,” of his own stunts, and since he hasn’t yet been carried out in a stretcher from the set of his most action-intensive movies, we have to assume he’s very professional and careful. Turns out we’re not the only ones thinking it.
“He’s an athlete, he is a stuntman, and he’s one of the best in the world. When he comes to set, not only is he fully engaged in the technical side of things and the acting side of things, but he is so clear and aware physically of what needs to happen for a stunt to go not only smoothly, but in a dynamic way,” Hayley Atwell told Screen Rant in an interview.
“[He uses] multiple takes, different lenses, different angles, and different levels of performance.
And his commitment is knowing how to be competent at something, and therefore safe – because he’s not careful in the sense of putting himself on guard.”
She continued: “He actually kind of goes, “I want to be fearless in this way. I can only be fearless if I really know what I’m doing technically and physically and [am] really good at it.” And so for me, I trust him implicitly because I also know he trusts himself. His level of detail and attention, and his care for us and very much his care for me, was very much [like] a mentor.”
I guess when you work with an experienced and humble actor – “humble” being the exact words his costars use to describe him – like Tom Cruise, his role kind of transforms to that of a mentor.
