The stars who played Donna Martin and Brenda Walsh in the 1990 teen series recently reunited at Shannen’s podcast “Let’s Be Clear” on Monday, April 22 to take a trip down memory lane on how their friendship fizzled out.
At first, the “Girls Just Want To Fun” actress narrated how prior to the show, she and Tori sat down to factor the reason for their breakup but came up short, “because it’s like one minute, we were friends, and then one minute we weren’t.”
Tori on the other hand admitted that she has always been one to be easily “swayed” and that might have been the cause. Shannen agreed, adding, “You were always easily swayed. And it was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion.’ Like, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re talented. I loved you and I respected you and I wanted you to believe in yourself as much as I believed in you.”
Tori Spelling — Tori’s Ex-Boyfriend Was The Issue
As the two attempted to “figure out what was the weak point,” Shannen suggested that Tori’s then relationship must have been the issue, “I think it was your boyfriend,” before going on to recall their visit to Mexico which somehow was their last trip together. They brought along their then-boyfriends to the trip.
The “No One Would Tell” star recalled, “There was a point — I specifically remember looking at you and saying, ‘You have to end it with him, or I’m going to actually kill him. Like — I can’t stand by and watch this,'” after the trip, their friendship gradually went downhill, “And all I can think is that because you didn’t break up with him. You stayed and you got tortured for a little bit longer.”
The 53-year-old also commented on the fun memories they had while filming the 1990-2000 series before the collapse of their friendship, “There were so many really interesting moments about that time in the show and in our relationship,” said Shannen, “I can’t recall the exact rift but I’m thinking all of those things sort of collided at one time, and maybe it was just so much pressure from other people that you know, the friendship just dissipated. And then you gravitated towards others.”
Tori apologized and blamed her inability to “Speak Up” for it, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t [speak up]. I still can’t speak up for myself sometimes — at 50.” She continued, “I think when I was young, it was whoever was the alpha more at the moment would sway me. And I think I couldn’t stand up for myself … I didn’t take ownership of anything. So it’s like, you know, nice, nice, nice to everyone. But it’s like you said, have a f—ing opinion about something. And I’m sure I did.”
