Tyra Banks Lands New Hosting Role Following ‘DWTS’ Exit

After a turbulent ride as host on Dancing With the Stars, Tyra Banks is making a surprising return to television—and this time, audiences are cheering her on.

Gone are the runway-inspired theatrics and the side-eye from loyal DWTS fans. Instead, Banks recently appeared as a guest co-host on TODAY with Jenna & Friends, and the vibe? Completely different. Warm, funny, relaxed.

It’s as if she’s finally landed in a role where her personality doesn’t feel like it’s wrestling with the format. For those who remember her DWTS era, the difference is night and day.

A Misstep on the Dance Floor

Tyra’s hosting journey on Dancing With the Stars started off with controversy. Stepping into Season 29, she replaced longtime favorite Tom Bergeron—an abrupt decision by ABC that left fans already uneasy.

She knew she had massive shoes to fill, but despite her experience in front of the camera, the chemistry just wasn’t there.

Over her three seasons, fans often described her presence as overwhelming. The ballroom turned into more of a catwalk, with viewers criticizing her for turning the spotlight onto herself rather than the dancers.

The show’s format, which traditionally let the contestants and choreography shine, suddenly had to compete with wardrobe changes and awkward moments.

Behind the scenes, it wasn’t smooth sailing either. Reports hinted at tensions with the production team and contestants.

One insider said, “Tyra has had struggles warming up to the team, contestants, and certainly the audience. There seems to be a disconnect again with viewers which always raises concerns.”

“I really, really want to focus on my business and you can’t do that while hosting a show,” she explained. “So you’ll see me creating things, not just hosting.”

That business? Her global ice cream venture, SMiZE & Dream, which she launched in 2021. And she’s all in. “I’m really focused on business, like crazy focused,” she said. “I think it’s time to graduate from the dance floor to the stock market floor. Mic drop.”

A Fresh Start on a New Stage

Now based in Australia, Tyra occasionally returns to the U.S. for work—and it was during one of those trips that she joined Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY with Jenna & Friends.

The gig may be temporary, but viewers are already clamoring for more.

“This is a happy place. Have you had fun? I had so much fun! I’m so happy, I had so much fun with you,” she said to Jenna during their on-air exchange, closing the segment with a friendship bracelet and a heartfelt hug.

Jenna responded in kind: “Tyra, I had the best time! Will you come back tomorrow?”

Tyra’s grin said it all: “I am so back!”

Fans Are Loving It

From the moment she appeared on the show, fans lit up the comments section with praise.

“Tyra is the best co-host. After watching, I want more of her,” one wrote.
