Valerie Bertinelli, Food Network star, cited “irreconcilable differences” between the pair as the reason for the separation in newly obtained court documents.
Valerie Bertinelli Withholds From Filing For Dissolution Of Marriage After Filing Legal Separation
Valerie Bertinelli has filed for legal separation from her husband Tom Vitale after ten years of marriage.
Valerie, 61, filed the documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, per court records obtained by PEOPLE.
In the documents, Valerie wrote that “irreconcilable differences” between her and her spouse is the reason she’s looking for the separation. She is yet to file for the dissolution of their marriage.
The court records also disclose that Bertinelli and Vitale have a premarital agreement that they will be adhering to.
Bertinelli and Vitale finally tied the knot in 2011 after dating for many years. Patrick, Bertinelli’s brother introduced the couple.
“I think I got tired of calling him ‘my spousal equivalent,’ ” the actress gushed during an appearance on The View shortly after she tied the knot. “It’s nice to call him my husband. It feels appropriate.”
Prior to her marriage to Vitale, the “One Day at a Time” alum was previously married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007. The pair share 30-year-old son Wolfgang.

Eddie passed away at age 65 in October 2020 from lung cancer. Following his death, Bertinelli publicly mourned him and paid tribute to him. She opened up about the grief she experienced when she learned of his passing in an interview with therapist Angie Johnsey.

“You never like this new normal but that’s what it is,” she said, referencing life after losing someone. “It’s about finding a way to survive this new normal… which many people are doing. This whole year unfortunately has been about death and grieving and loss.”
“Too many people have lost too many things. It’s just shattering what’s going on,” she added. “Talking about grief is the appropriate thing to do. We’re all going through some form of it.”
