Valerie Bertinelli Says People Don’t Speak About Emotional Abuse Because It’s Not Physical

People often don’t see the need to talk about the emotional abuse they endured in a relationship simply because it’s not physical. Well, Bertinelli wants to let you know, whether it’s physical or emotional, abuse is abuse.

The actress also talked about losing our identities in our mission to please our partners. Some people make it hard to love them without leaving a huge piece of yourself behind. If that ever happens, Valerie Bertinelli wants you to leave in order to find that love you should feel for yourself.

On Friday, the Food Network star, 62, reposted a video of a woman talking about why people get out of relationships. At the end of the clip, she added her own commentary.

“When it comes to emotional abuse and mental abuse, it’s not talked about, because you just think, ‘I’m not being physically abused, so it’s not abuse,’ “ Bertinelli said.

She continued by saying that “some women get so lost in trying to make their partner feel so loved, so respected that they’ve lost any kind of love or respect that they have for themselves.”

She then noted that leaving can help someone who has been in this sort of relationship “find themselves again, to just love themselves again, because they don’t even know who they are.”

She also called on fans to share their thoughts.

In May 2022, Bertinelli filed for divorce from her second husband Tom Vitale, six months after she filed for legal separation in November 2021. When the divorce became official in November 2022, she publicly shared that it was the “second best day of my life.”

On New Year’s Day, the actress shared a lengthy post detailing how much she was eagerly looking forward to the coming year.

“This new year’s day is coming in so much happier than last year’s,” the mom of one shared on Instagram.

“From a young age, New Year’s Day has been one of my absolute favorite days, for the last 5-6 years it’s been one of the saddest. No more,” she continued. “There is so much to look forward to now, when before it just looked endlessly sad, scary, lonely and stressful. I have no idea what’s ahead for me and I’m not worried. I’m free. This new years day, 2023, is the first day of the rest of my life!”

She then wished her fans kindness and joy for the year ahead.
