What Johnny Depp Said To Terry Gilliam During Their ‘Jeanne Du Barry’ UK Reunion

Johnny Depp was all smiles as he reunited with his old pals at the UK premiere of his French-language movie ‘Jeanne Du Barry.’

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star even cracked a few jokes along the way and expressed his gratitude to get to star as the “King of France” in Maïwenn’s ‘Jeanne Du Barry.’

On Monday, Johnny Depp reunited with director Terry Gilliam on the red carpet of his costume movie by French filmmaker Maïwenn. The film will be distributed in the UK starting April 19 via Depp’s London-based film company IN.2.

During the premiere event, which took place at the Curzon theater in Mayfair, Gilliam apparently ticked Depp off by grilling him for being ten minutes late.

“Sorry, it’s too late — the film has started 10 minutes ago,” Gilliam, who directed Depp in 1998’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and 2009’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” said.

He then teased the star by calling him the “new Jackie Chan,” probably in reference to the fact that Depp has been working out.

However, Depp had the last laugh as he jokingly grilled him back by introducing him to the assembled photographers and videographers as “Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tim Burton.”

Before heading into the screening, Depp also met with aspiring filmmakers from the London branch of the Ghetto Film School, which also has hubs in Los Angeles and New York.

Taking the stage at the event, Depp shared his gratitude towards the French writer, director and actress for offering him the role of King Louis XV. He also called her courageous for it.

“Instantly what happens in your brain is that you go back to Eastern Kentucky … you realize that you come from the ‘ombelico,’ ‘nombril,’ the belly button of nowhere and you’re playing the king of France,” he said.

“It made no sense to me, I tried to talk her out of it. She wasn’t hearing it, and she had great courage to take me into her cast.”
