The 2024 Grammy Award Winner, Miley Cyrus who took home two Grammys — Best Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year—for her 2023 mega-hit “Flowers,” on February 4, gave a shout-out to just her mom and sister during her acceptance speech. And one can’t help but notice she intentionally omitted a very important family member in her vote of thanks.
And just to be clear to everyone present that she knows just the amount of people in her life that deserve to be name-dropped in her appreciation speech, the “Wrecking Ball” singer added, “I don’t think I forgot anyone—but I might’ve forgotten underwear. Bye!”
This is somewhat shocking or rather surprising, to say the least, because it’s public knowledge how close Miley was with her father Billy Ray Cyrus right from when she was young. The fact that Miley didn’t think of uttering at least a ‘thank you dad’ raised a lot of eyebrows.
Of course, there’s no smoke without fire, right? Stay with us as we explain all the details of the ongoing rift between Miley and Ray. Before that, let’s take a quick trip to Miley’s childhood, shall we?
Miley Cyrus — Miley’s Childhood/Family Issues
Miley, whose real name is Destiny Hope Cyrus was born into the family of Tish Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus in November 1992. A year after her birth, her parents tied the knot in December 1993.
At the time, Billy adopted Tish’s Children Brandi and Trace Cyrus who she had in 1987 and 1989 respectively in her previous marriage with ex-husband Baxter Helson.
Seven months before Miley’s birth, Billy’s ex-girlfriend Kristin Luckey had a son by him and was named Christopher Cody Cyrus. Two years after Miley’s birth, Tish gave birth to a son Braison Cyrus, in 1994, and in 2000, Billy’s last child Noah Cyrus arrived.
From the year 2006 through 2010, Billy and Miley starred as father and daughter in the Disney Channel’s popular sitcom “Hannah Montana” where Miley starred as herself while also trying to be a normal teenager without the fame. The family crisis started when her parents attempted to end their marriage for the first time in 2010.
The couple retraced their steps on the divorce matter the following year. But then, two years later, in 2013, Billy filed for divorce for the second time in their marriage, but after a public callout by Miley on social media a month later, the pair dismissed the divorce case citing that they realized that they still love each other and want to work through their problems. They even mentioned that they’re seeing a therapist to help them.
In 2018, Miley exchanged vows with her on-again-off-again boyfriend who she starred alongside in the 2010 film “The Last Song.” But the very next year they filed for divorce and it was finalized in 2020.
However, her parents’ last and final attempt to divorce occurred in April 2022, as the couple cited “irreconcilable differences” as their reason. Tish also revealed that since February 2020, she and Billy Ray haven’t lived together as a couple.
Miley Cyrus — Moving On From Both Sides
That same year, barely three months after their divorce in 2022, the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy, proposed to Australian singer Firerose who is 27 years younger than him and just a few years older than Miley in August. Since her parents’ divorce, sources say that Miley and Billy drifted apart.
A source close to the “We Can’t Stop” singer told E! News exclusively at the time that “The divorce between her parents have put a strain on her relationship with her dad and it’s been hard to connect with him in the last year, she hopes they can eventually work on their relationship.”
According to the source, since her parents’ divorce, Miley has drawn close to her mom, trying to be supportive. The source also revealed that Miley isn’t on close terms with her dad’s new girlfriend/fiance, but Miley hopes her dad is happy with his relationship.
Meanwhile, Billy wasn’t the only one that moved on. Tish also did as she later announced her engagement with the “Prison Break” actor Dominic Purcell in April 2023, with Miley and Brandi, and Tracey on her side. The pair exchanged vows in August 2023.
Billy on the other hand married Firerose in October 2023, but Miley did not attend the ceremony. Little wonder why she excluded him from her acceptance speech despite him being a huge part of her life and career.
As if the omission didn’t sink in, the morning after the Grammys which was February 5, Miley took to her Instagram to once again appreciate everyone but Billy. Her post reads, “My lover, my momos, my friends, my collaborators , @kidharpoon @tylersamj @pollackmusic @aldaelong , every single person who made this song and album possible!” she wrote.
She continued, “My team (a little extra love to the glam team), Bill Sobel who is my hero and doesn’t have Instagram so will probably never see this, Crush Music , Olivia + FANMADE, Ron Perry and all of Columbia records.” She then made another post saying, “PS I was only kidding…. I had on matching custom @gucci panties.”
