Earlier this year, on January 31, the “Sister Act” star Whoopi Goldberg made a statement which sent her home from “The View” for two weeks. It seemed she may have repeated those comments, again.
Here’s a brief on what happened. Co-host of “The View” Goldberg made a remark on air where she said that the Holocaust which involved the murder of six million Jews and other victims was not “about race” but rather “about man’s inhumanity to man.”
That insinuation alone landed her in two weeks suspension from the talk show, though many viewers haven’t forgiven the actress for her remark.
Whoopi Goldberg — What Brought The Second Backlash To Goldberg
The following day Feb. 1, after her on-air remarks and the heat it brought to her, Goldberg, 67, apologized by saying she should never have said it wasn’t about race, she “should have said it is about both.”
Citing what the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League said, Goldberg said, “As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people—who they deemed to be an inferior race,’ I stand corrected.”
Eleven months later, Goldberg came under fire again after she repeated the same thing to “The Sunday Times.”
On boxing day, Dec. 26, Goldberg argued with the outlet after she said that she can’t understand why her comments on the Jews had the amount of backlash it had. She insisted that some of the Jews are still confused as to whether they’re a race or a religion.
The actress went on to say, “My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race.’ So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race.”
The journalist opposed Goldberg’s view on the issue by pointing out that the Nazis sees the Jews as a race. Well, Goldberg replied, “Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it? The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’re saying?”
Whoopi Goldberg — Goldberg’s Public Apology
On Tuesday, Dec. 27, Goldberg issued another apology concerning her Holocaust remarks. She said, “Recently while doing press in London, I was asked about my comments from earlier this year.”
Her statement continues, “I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why, and attempted to recount that time. It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in. I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me.”
“I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt and angered people. My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not.”
The actress concludes her statement with “In this time of rising antisemitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I always stood with the Jewish people and always will.”
Meanwhile, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League was against Goldberg’s actions and said in a statement to “The Wrap” the same day, “Whoopi Goldberg’s comments about the Holocaust and race are incredibly disappointing, especially given that this is not the first time she had made remarks like this.”
“In a moment when antisemitic incidents have surged across the US, she should realize that making such ignorant statements can have real consequences.”
