A Family Outing at the 2024 Olympics
On August 4, Mendes and Gosling, accompanied by their daughters Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 8, attended the women’s gymnastics uneven bars final at Paris’ Bercy Arena.
Despite her usual discomfort with photographers, Mendes expressed her gratitude for the respect shown to her family’s privacy during the event, particularly as Suni Lee secured a bronze medal.
“I love @nbcolympics didn’t cut away to the kids!” Mendes wrote in an Instagram comment on August 6. “And most sites blurred their faces so mama bear is happy about that. Anyway it felt so good to be there and feel unified with people.”
A Relationship Out of the Public Eye
Though they tend to stay out of the public eye, this doesn’t reflect any issues in their relationship, which has remained strong for over a decade.
The pair hasn’t appeared on a red carpet together since March 28, 2013, at the New York premiere of “The Place Beyond the Pines,” the film that brought them together.
Since then, Mendes has significantly reduced her public appearances and focused more on her business endeavors. However, her 6 million Instagram followers still get glimpses into her life, even if she’s careful about what she shares.
In early 2021, she addressed a comment suggesting she was posting less because she had undergone cosmetic work. Mendes clarified, “I’m posting less because I really want to be present for my family… I personally cannot juggle family and social media.”
Mendes has also become more open about motherhood and more vocal in supporting Gosling, whom she often refers to as “Mi Hombre, Mi Vida, Mi Amor.”
When Gosling’s film “Barbie” received eight Oscar nominations, Mendes proudly posted on January 24, “So proud of my man… Despite all the #Notmyken ridicule… he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking, now iconic character and took it all the way to Oscars.”
Embracing Motherhood And New Pursuits
Though Mendes has shifted her focus away from acting, she has embraced being a mother and managing other pursuits, including her children’s book, “Desi, Mami & the Never Ending Worries.”
She described the challenges and unexpected rewards of motherhood, sharing in 2020 how she had adapted to full-on “mom mode” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even as their daughters grow, Mendes continues to prioritize their privacy. She has explained that she won’t post pictures of them online until they’re old enough to give consent.
Gosling, meanwhile, cherishes his time with his family, recently noting in an interview with British GQ how fast their children are growing.
Glimpses Into Family Life
As their daughters grew older, Mendes started sharing more about her family life, revealing in October 2019 on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that Gosling is quite skilled in the kitchen.
Reflecting on their time together, she humorously denied falling in love with him at first, only to concede later with admiration, “Look at him, though.”
Despite their fame, Mendes and Gosling have managed to keep their private life largely out of the spotlight.
Mendes remained out of the public eye during her pregnancies, and it wasn’t until she was seven months along that the world knew she was expecting, both in 2014 with Esmeralda and in 2016 with Amada.
Gosling, known for his charm and reluctance to discuss his private life, has occasionally let his guard down.
While accepting a Golden Globe in January 2017 for “La La Land,” he publicly thanked Mendes for supporting him during filming while she raised their daughter and was pregnant with their second child, all while helping her brother battle cancer.
Despite their privacy, Mendes and Gosling are clearly dedicated to their family and each other.
They may not share much publicly, but their rare appearances and occasional glimpses into their lives are enough to show that their bond is strong.
