Spelling And Austin Reveals Cause Of Estrangement
The two actors discussed the causes of their protracted estrangement and how they managed to reunite on the August 26th episode of the “Old-Ish” podcast, which was co-hosted by Green, his fiancée Sharna Burgess, and Spelling’s brother Randy Spelling.
During the first part of this two-part special, Spelling, now 51, reminisced about their final days on set, revealing her emotional response to the series ending.
“I remember our last conversation and the last thing we said to each other before those 18 years… I was crying,” she shared. “I was afraid we’d lose touch because we were so close. We grew up together and were such good friends.” She likened the end of “90210” to experiencing a divorce, saying it felt like both moving on and losing a significant daily presence in her life.

Green, also 51, recounted his efforts to maintain their bond, even visiting Spelling at her then-boyfriend Vincent Young’s place after leaving Vanessa Marcil’s house, his partner at the time and mother of his son, Kassius.
Despite his attempts, he felt that Spelling was distancing herself. “It was just this thing of like, ‘She just doesn’t want to be my friend.’ I genuinely felt that way,” he explained.
Spelling admitted that her relationship with Young, which she described as “not good” for her, played a part in her avoiding Green, whom she viewed as her “protector.” She believed Green didn’t approve of her relationship with Young, which affected her willingness to maintain contact.
“You had a good working relationship with Vincent but I don’t think you felt like our personal relationship was something that was correct for me,” Spelling acknowledged.
Similarly, Spelling expressed her discomfort with Green’s relationship with Marcil, stating, “That relationship was frustrating to see from a friend’s perspective who loves someone so much… To see what is going on and see how your friend is treated and not be OK with it.” However, she also recognized that everyone must navigate their own experiences.

Reconnection And Current Friendship
Years later, they encountered each other at a “90210” DVD release party, but even then, Spelling kept her distance. Green remembered feeling that his efforts to reconnect were not reciprocated.
“I felt like I’ve lived up to my half of the bargain. I tried to visit. I would call you. When that wasn’t reciprocated at some point… you give up,” he recalled.
Spelling confirmed Green’s perspective and explained her reasons for pulling back, highlighting how her discomfort with their respective romantic partners influenced her actions. Nonetheless, she never stopped thinking about Green and hoped to reconnect.
In recent years, Green and Spelling have rekindled their friendship, which has become stronger than ever. Green likened their bond to that of siblings, expressing his joy over their renewed connection. “I love the fact that we now can talk about these things,” he told Spelling. “We’re sitting in front of each other and it hasn’t been 18 years… And we text and we’re back to having that relationship that we had. We won. It’s a victory lap that we get to take.”
Both actors have also been in the spotlight recently due to the death of their “90210” co-star Shannen Doherty, who passed away at age 53 following a public battle with cancer. Spelling and Green paid tribute to Doherty on social media, reflecting on the impact she had on their lives and careers.
