Will Smith Apologizes To Chris Rock, Damage Control?

On Monday, Will Smith took to his Instagram to write a lengthy post, apologizing to Chris Rock for his actions at the Oscars. That’s is the first time Will is apologizing directly to Chris since the incident at the ,94th Annual Academy Award.

He admitted he was wrong and explained he did what he did out of love for his wife. “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be,” he continued, “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees, and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family,” Will said “I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”

At the 94th Annual Academy Award which took place on Sunday, March 27, in Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, Chris Rock made a joke saying “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right?”

When Chris made that joke, he was referring to her hair matching Demi Moore’s shaved head in the movie G.I. Jane. Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith who has a condition that causes her to lose her hair, didn’t find the joke funny, but, out of the blues, Will rose up from his seat, walked up to Chris, slapped him, and returned to his seat.

Will won the award for Best Actor in his role as Richard in the movie King Richard, while giving his speech, he teared up, apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees for his actions.

The Academy, in a statement made on Monday afternoon, said “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law.”

The Academy went on to share the organization’s Standards of Conduct which says “provide an ethical framework for Academy members,” and stated, “Members should act in a manner consistent with the good reputation of the Academy.”

As listed in the document, unacceptable conduct includes “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate and unwelcome.” The Standards of Conduct also say that if a member is found to have violated the standards, “the Academy may take any disciplinary action permitted by the Academy’s Bylaws, up to and including suspension of membership or expulsion from membership.”
