Will Smith can’t seem to escape his Oscars meltdown. For instance, Eddie Murphy recently mocked Smith slapping Chris Rock. And Hollywood casting agents reportedly hesitate to take a chance on the actor.
But now Will received a verdict from someone unexpected. Find out what Serena William‘s father shared about his views on Smith. Get all the details below.
Serena William’s – Father ‘King Richard’ Weighs In On Will Smith
Will Smith famously portrayed Serena Williams’ father in the movie King Richard. And Smith even won an Oscars for his role. But Will received the golden statue just after his infamous Oscars scandal. As a result, some wondered how Serena’s father felt about Smith.
And now King Richard, as he’s dubbed, finally discussed his views. However, the retired tennis coach feels positive about how Will portrayed him in the film King Richard. And he told the Sun that he dos not feel any resentment toward Smith.
But Serena’s father also noted that he and his family do not condone any type of violence. But Richard, at 80, shared he refuses to judge Smith for his actions. Will famously walked up to Chris Rock at the Academy Awards and slapped him. The violent act occurred after Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.
And after Will returned to his chair, he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth.” But although Richard did not view the ceremony, his son showed him the clip on YouTube. And Serena’s father shared that he believes Will should be allowed to keep his Oscar.
Will Smith – Will ‘Never’ Get Criticized By Serena William’s Dad
And King Richard took a positive view of the actor. For instance, he declared, “I think that whatever he [Will] wants to do, that’s what he should do.” But Richard also recognized that Smith has faced repeated criticism ever since his Oscars scandal.
And Serena’s dad pointed out, “People are going to think what they want to think. If he apologized [that’s good]. However he wants to deal with the situation. I wouldn’t judge anyone.”
Because Richard feels Will worked intensely to portray the tennis coach, he championed the actor. And he shared, “They should let him keep his Oscar, too. When a person [has] worked for [it] so much, then leave it alone. I really appreciate him doing so very much so I could never criticize him.”
In the wake of Smith slapping Rock, the Academy issued a ban of 10 years on the actor. But Richard feels that seems much too severe. And he opined, “Just two days, that’s enough, that’s very much.”
