Supporters of Will Smith hyped his movie Emancipation like the yellow brick road to a comeback. But for the actor to achieve that goal, his film needed to score big bucks at the box office. However, ticket sales didn’t turn out as planned, according to Radar.

For instance, the opening weekend for Emancipation showed that the $120 million movie took in an average of $3k per screen. And that result disappointed Will, said an insider. Once known as a box office phenomenon, the 54-year-old father of three got a reality check. 

“Will knows it’s a long road to redemption,” shared the source. “And a lot of folks won’t forgive him. But this really rams it home.”

However, moviegoers aren’t the only ones snubbing Will Smith at this point in his life. And many in Hollywood won’t forget or forgive the actor for that infamous Oscars slap. Since hitting Chris Rock at the Academy Awards over a joke connected to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, Will has faced one repercussion after another. And though Smith’s defenders understand Will’s desire to protect his wife, his behavior at the award show horrified onlookers.

Beyond the box office bomb, Will has seen other results of his actions. For example, the 2023 Golden Globe nominees failed to include the actor. And his film also got snubbed. 

But even formerly close friends want to avoid Smth, say insiders. And one source used Tom Cruise as an example. Smith and Cruise enjoyed a close bond before Will slapped Chris. And now Cruise wants to totally avoid Smith.

“Will has approached Tom several times, trying to reconnect and see if they can hang out and brainstorm on some projects together,” revealed one insider. And the source added, “A solid movie with Tom would guarantee Will’s comeback, or so he thinks. Will has even offered to fly to London if that’s more convenient.”

However, Cruise “isn’t biting,” summed up the insider. “And [Tom] doesn’t even write him back.” As for whether that situation might change in the near future? The source predicted that Cruise won’t “be stupid enough to put his neck on the line and be dragged down by association. He doesn’t want to get sucked back into the Hollywood scene — especially by way of Will Smith. He’s still kryptonite.”
