The biggest reaction of the night at the 94th annual Academy Awards ceremony in LA came from Will Smith smacking Chris Rock’s face after he cracked that Jada Pinkett Smith resembled GI Jane.
On Sunday funnyman Chris was about to present the award for Best Documentary when he started in with the jokes, landing one about Smith’s wife’s hair. In 2018 Pinkett revealed she was diagnosed with alopecia.
Chris Rock Got Smacked
Chris referenced the couple then said he couldn’t wait to see, “G.I. Jane 2.” Next the camera showed Smith laughing while Pinkett rolled her eyes. Then the camera caught Smith walking to the stage, going up to Rock and slapping him. Rock stood his ground then said, “Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s*** outta me.”
He then said, “That was the greatest night in the history of television.”
Is There Beef Between Chris Rock and Will Smith?
According to TMZ, “The American broadcast on ABC muted and even froze, but in other countries it continued … and Will shouted “Keep my wife’s name out your f****** mouth” twice to Chris.”
According to the outlet, Chris kept going, presented the Oscar, and the audience reactions were mixed. Photos show Penelope Cruz with a WTH look on her face while Nicole Kidman was caught with her mouth wide open and eyes like platters.
Minutes later Smith won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard. “Smith issued a tearful apology for his emotional outburst, saying: ‘I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment.’”
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, at this moment I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do.”

Jada Pinkett Smith Was Not Amused
Social media erupted with speculation after the onstage incident: was it real or staged? According to the Daily Mail, Vanity Fair executive editor Ramin Setoodeh was tweeting live from the event and claimed that “someone who works for the Oscars told him that Rock was not interrupted by Smith at rehearsals yesterday.”
“It was not supposed to happen. It was real.”
Later cameras captured Smith being talked to by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, and at one point Bradley Cooper was seen talking to Smith.
The 94th Academy Awards took place Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
