Will Smith’s Long-Awaited Album Flops on the Charts

Will Smith's Long-Awaited Album Flops on the ChartsWill Smith truly surprised fans this 2025 by releasing a full length album – his first in 20 years. I bet most Gen Zs didn’t even know that Smith was a rapper once-upon-a-time. Yeah, the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ really was.

Before getting his big break in acting and going on to dominate the movie industry for over two decades, Smith was spitting his rhymes and collecting his stars.

So why didn’t his comeback drive the millions of fans he’s accumulated so far to listen? Some think they may know why, and it has something to do with a certain slap.

Will Smith’s Album Does Dismal Numbers And Fails To Chart Nearly A Month After Its Release

If it should happen to anyone, it’s absolutely strange that it’s happening to Smith. I mean, he’s got millions of fans at his fingertips. Yes, maybe the Oscars slap may have decreased his likeability ratio, but still.

According to Daily Mail, Smith’s new album ‘Based On A True Story’ only sold 268 copies in its first week in the UK.

This is an incredibly low number for a project that features the likes of Big Sean, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor and his own son Jaden.

Even more surprising that it should go down like this when you consider that it’s the first piece of music that the ‘I Am Legend’ star has released since his 2005 album, ‘Lost And Found.’ Not only did this album not perform well, but it marked his very first record not to chart.

Despite whatever anyone might think of Will Smith’s reputation being damaged by the Oscar slap, the star has since starred in a sequel to ‘Bad Boys’ titled ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ and is planning to being back several of his old movies.

Some that are already planned are the sequels to ‘I Am Legend,’ ‘Hancock’ and ‘Hitch.’ However, a PR expert believes that releasing an album was Smith’s way of climbing back into the public’s good graces.

If it really was that, can we file this under PR moves that were a total burst, because The Sun reported that the album was only downloaded 36 times – yeah, I had to recheck the number too.

Apart from the album, Smith has announced a UK and European tour. However, fans soon found that most of the venues have about a 5,000-people capacity, which frankly falls a bit too low for a global star of his fame and status.
