Comedic legend, Carol Burnett, recently stopped by LIVE With Kelly & Mark, where she talked about a variety of things, including how becoming a mega-fan of the soap All My Children (AMC) led to a guest run on the daytime drama.
Carol Burnett – Chats AMC With Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos About Her Love Of The Soap
LIVE host Kelly Ripa (ex-AMC Hayley Vaughan) notes during the interview that she and Burnett, “go way back a long time”; referring to when she and hubby, LIVE co-host Mark Consuelos (ex-AMC Mateo Santos) worked with the comedy icon on the daytime drama.
Carol played Verla Grubbs, who, according to Ripa was “extraordinary in every way”. Burnett told the LIVE hosts that she first started watching AMC when her kids were young.
Carol notes that she caught them watching AMC, and asked what they were doing. She sat down and was instantly “hooked”.
Burnett stated that she was so immersed in AMC that when her family planned a trip to Europe (before VCRs or TiVo), she was quite upset about all the “action” she’d be missing from Pine Valley.
She wasn’t sure she was going to last the entire vacay without knowing what her favorite AMC characters were up to. So, she had a friend send her a telegram every Friday, to the concierge to keep her up to date on all the drama.
Carol Burnett’s AMC Obsession
Burnett went on to say that she successfully received telegram messages throughout her European vacation as the family traveled through London and Rome.
When they got to Lake Como, they went to bed after dinner with friends but were awoken at around 2 a.m. The hotel manager was in front of her, shaking. He told her he had a telegram for her, which he wrote down.
It read, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab. Mona has to have exploratory surgery — doesn’t look good. Chuck has learned that Donna, who’s carrying his baby, was once a hooker. Hope you’re having a great trip.”
