According to a spokesperson for Callahan, he died today after suffering a massive stroke at his Palm Desert, California home. He was 66 years old.
Callahan reportedly suffered the stroke on Friday, March 27, and was subsequently taken to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, at which time he was put on life support.

Prior to their divorce Callahan was married to fellow soap star Eva La Rue (Maria on All My Children; Celeste Rosales on The Young and the Restless). Prior to his passing LaRue and daughter, Kaya traveled to be with the late actor at his bedside.

The actress issued the following statement: “We are extremely saddened and distraught over the loss of John,”. “He was my great friend, co-parent and an amazing father to Kaya. The absence of his bigger than life, gregarious personality will leave a hole in our hearts forever. Words cannot express the shock and devastation we are feeling at this time. The Yankees just lost one of their greatest fans.”
The actor’s passing is not COVID-19 related but due to hospital safety regulations in place due to coronavirus, LaRue and the Kaya were able to see Callahan but were later told of his death by phone.

Callahan appeared on AMC from 1992 to2005 and he and LaRue had a romantic pairing onscreen at AMC which turned into a real-life marriage.
In addition to his work on AMC, Callahan played Craig Hunt on Santa Barbara, Leo Russell on General Hospital, and Eric Stavros on Falcon Crest.
In 1989 he appeared on Days of our Lives and in 2008 he reappeared as a different character, Dr. Baker. In recent times Callahan appeared in the web series, Ladies of the Lake and The Bay.
The New York native starred on Santa Barbara from 1986 to 1988 and he appeared on Falcon Crest from 1989 to 1992.
The talented actor starred as Leo Russell on General Hospital from 1984 to 1985, then as Eric Stavros on the prime time series Falcon Crest from 1986 to 1988.
