According to the Sun, a source revealed that “the reason he’s been able to work for so long and so passionately is he’s always looked after himself, and he still does, so he’ll be back as soon as it makes sense.”

They also added: “But because he asked for a break, the writers had to formulate a storyline around him to keep his character out completely for some time. They already have ideas for how they would like to bring Ken back in later this summer—and everyone will be pleased to see him, along with the rest of the cast back together in the same place.”

In an interview that saw Bill speaking about the show’s 60th anniversary, he made it clear that he had no plans to retire. “I don’t even like to think about how they’d write Ken out if I did leave, because hopefully that is never going to happen.”

As for being chosen to play the character, he recollected in an interview with Liverpool post in 2007, “I played a young soldier in Germany who fraternized with a German girl, although I can’t remember how it ended. It was highly prestigious, though, and I have tried to hunt it down but there is no trace of it. But Tony Barlow, who created Coronation Street, saw it and thought I was right for Ken Barlow.”

His first autobiography, Ken and Me, was published in 1993 and showed people a glimpse of his life both as Ken Barlow and Bill Roache. He is also Coronation Street’s longest-serving actor as he has been in the show from its very first day.
