As there will be no face coverings involved in the upcoming episodes, this has become mandatory in shops and supermarkets in England. This came after Matt Hancock, who is the health secretary, recently announced that people will be required to wear a mask in England shops from the 24th of July. If someone does not wear a mask then they can be fined up to £100.
Coronation Street Updates – Social Distancing and COVID Rules in Soaps
The 24th of July will also be the same date that will start to refer to the pandemic and Covid-19. This will include the character’s social distancing and referring to the rules that have been put into place in real life. In one scene, Gary Windass will be visiting The Kabin. This will include a one-way system that will be in place and will include guidelines on where someone would stand. However, in the scene, he will not be wearing a mask due, which was recently made a rule in real life.
Corrie Spoilers – ITV Spokesperson CoAnd Corrie Boss Speak Out About Pandemic In Soap
An ITV spokesperson stated to Digital Spy, “We’d appreciate the audience respecting that new episodes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale were recorded before the recent health and safety legislation. Some scenes will be out of kilter with what is happening in the real world.” Many of the episodes were shot in June so some rules and changes that are made in real life will not be seen in the show immediately. However, the show bosses ask for understanding from their viewers.
Iain MacLeod, Corrie’s boss, recently stated, “In episodes from July 24, they are the first ones where they acknowledge the pandemic there. It’s just like the flip of a switch. I think the audience understands and will go with it. Very quickly, we’re into a post-pandemic world and I am sure there will be continuity comments but we have a mature audience who will understand.”
