The actor who plays the role of Geoff has shared the importance of the current storyline and told all the reasons why the topic has to be explored. This storyline has gone over some of the resources that could help those stuck in Yasmeen’s situation.

In the video, he stated, “Hello, my name is Ian, and I play a character called Geoff Metcalfe in Coronation Street. Let me tell you a little something about Geoff; He’s a nasty piece of work. He abuses his partner Yasmeen. And the kind of abuse Geoff uses isn’t physical, it’s psychological. He messes with her head — that’s called coercive control, and it’s a criminal offense. Shelley King — who plays Yasmeen —me, along with the writers, storylines and producers of Coronation Street have all done a great deal of research with the help of Women’s Aid, and Independent Choices Greater Manchester because we wanted this storyline to be as realistic as possible.

He went on to say, “Women’s Aid have told me that they’ve had many women contacting them asking for help because they’ve watched the program, and they realized that they don’t actually have to be hit to be abused. During this current pandemic, and the lockdown that goes with it, many people are being forced to live in isolation with someone who is abusing them — a situation that is so terrifying that it’s almost impossible to imagine, unless of course, it’s happening to you.

    I am very happy for Ian to come out and say something about this storyline. I am sure it must be very hard for him to be cast in such a difficult subject. Reality is, a lot of people live this way and I hope he has brought awareness.
