ITV Coronation Street spoilers and updates now reveal the real reason that fan fave Sean Wilson left the role of Martin Platt. And it may not be what you think it is!

Wilson debuted on the cobbles in 1985 as 18-year old Martin Platt. The character left school and began working at Gail Tilsley’s (Helen Worth) cafe.

Fast forward five years and he and Gail were a couple after her husband died. As a result, he was a father figure to her son David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd). Wilson eventually left the show in 2005, and later returned in 2018.

Now it seems there might be a bit of misunderstanding about why Wilson exited the plum role in the past.

There is speculation that Wilson left after being told his character would marry Gail. Now comes word that Wilson left after being told he would become involved in a relationship with an underage girl.

Sean Wilson Speaks Out About His Corrie Exit

Martin told Metro.co.uk the real reason he left Corrie. “Lots of things have changed. There was a juxtapose of editorial thoughts at the time, and I morally felt that I had to stand very, very firm on the decision that I made and I think we all know what went on there, so there came a parting of ways.” “Things move on, especially in show business and the people that were in charge have moved on.”

Sean returned to the show after David Platt endured a horrific rape storyline and he asked his estranged father for help in moving through the incredible emotional journey.

According to Wilson, “David is in one of the biggest predicaments of his life after being raped. Not only do you have the attack itself, but there’s the aftermath and psychological effects. And that’s where Martin comes in.”

Wilson said, “I walked on to the set on my first day with Jack in the salon, and it was as if I’ve been in a coma for 12 years. It was creatively warm between Jack and myself. Perfect.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to come back, so I’m really pleased.

Wilson adds, “I questioned myself before I walked into the building, but I’ve been really pleased with the way it’s all turned around.”
