Tom Bergeron – Clashed With DWTS Execs
Dancing With The Stars fans expressed outrage and disappointment when popular host Tom Bergeron exited. But some suspected that something happened behind the scenes to result in Bergeron’s departure. And now Tom has shared the details via People.
Bergeron hosted Dancing With The Stars from 2005 to 2020. And in 2019, DWTS execs talked with him about planning the upcoming episodes. Because of the turmoil in the election year, Tom suggested that execs avoid casting any politicians. And Bergeron noted that he thought that by avoiding politics, DWTS could give viewers a “wonderful escape.”
However, then execs told him that Dancing With The Stars had cast ex-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. And Bergeron expressed outrage. “I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly what we said we wouldn’t do. Don’t go there. This is, you know, not the right time, play to our strengths, be the show that gives people a break from all this bulls**t’.”
DWTS – Offered To Let Tom Bergeron Out Of His Contract
Because Bergeron felt so upset, he recommended that he take a break for one season. But execs responded by offering to let him out of his contract. And Tom added, “That’s how strongly they felt. It really p**sed me off.”
But Bergeron admitted that he felt “furious.” And when his “temper kicked in,” he issued a statement. “It merely said, ‘I was told certain things when I was asked my opinion, they agreed, and now they’ve thrown a curveball.’ I even went so far as to say it’s their right to do that. They’re the producers of the show, if that’s what they want to do they are entitled to do that. We will have to agree to disagree.”
However, Bergeron revealed that when DWTS went ahead and cast Spicer, he “knew this is probably my last season, because of that one betrayal. Up until that point, there were people of character there.”
Tom Bergeron – Had ‘Fun’ Getting Fired
And when Tom left, he shared the news on social media. Bergeron kept it simple, sharing only that execs had told him that “@DancingABC will be continuing without me.” And he added that he didn’t feel surprised that ABC fired him from DWTS.
“In all candor, the show that I left was not the show that I loved,” he said. “So at the end of the season that turned out to be my last season, I kind of knew. I took everything out of my dressing room that I really wanted.”
And Bergeron reflected, “It was kind of obvious that we were kind of butting heads [behind the scenes]. It wasn’t a pleasant [experience]. I wasn’t surprised that that was my last season, so there was no blue period. Actually, I think Erin [Andrews] and I had more fun being fired than virtually anybody.”
