It was stated that “of course” the soap was being renewed, but there was still no deal. Eventually, everyone came to an agreement on the terms, and an official renewal announcement was released. What many viewers don’t realize is that sacrifices had to be made in order to get the renewal.

Days of Our Lives already has a tight budget. It was reduced even further, which was speculated when all the actors’ contracts were terminated. If they had to pay the cast less money, then new contracts would have to be drawn up.

When Days soap viewers complain about not enough sets, reduced screen time, or soap stars leaving, it all comes down to money. Casting is probably the biggest expense and it’s cheaper to hire those new to the business rather than dishing out a massive check to one daytime veteran.

DOOL Exits – Why Is Everyone Leaving?

Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, head writer Ron Carlivati explained why so many actors decided to leave around the same time. He blamed the exits on how long it took to get the soap renewed. The talks went on for such a long time that it sparked uncertainty. Actors couldn’t wait forever and by the time the renewal was announced, some already had other commitments.

But cast members moving on during negotiations wasn’t enough to meet the new budget constraints. They had to write out a few more characters, but it wasn’t easy deciding who to let go. The positive is that actors return all the time, even after a character’s death.
