Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, head writer Ron Carlivati explained why so many actors decided to leave around the same time. He blamed the exits on how long it took to get the soap renewed. The talks went on for such a long time that it sparked uncertainty. Actors couldn’t wait forever and by the time the renewal was announced, some already had other commitments.

But cast members moving on during negotiations wasn’t enough to meet the new budget constraints. They had to write out a few more characters, but it wasn’t easy deciding who to let go. The positive is that actors return all the time, even after a character’s death.
