He also had a shocking storyline back when he was still a priest. Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) was about to marry Kristen DiMera (then played by Eileen Davidson). During the wedding, the recording of Kristen raping the priest was played for everyone at the wedding… including Brady.

His most recent exit wasn’t as traumatic. Eric married the woman he considers his one true love. Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) crashed the “Ericole” ceremony, but the couple got married anyway. Then, there was Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold), who arrived at Eric and Nicole’s door. Not only was she missing, but Allie was trying to hide from her mother. Plus, Allie asked the couple if they would raise her baby. So, there was a lot going on already when Eric was asked to help villagers in the Congo. And just like that, Eric was gone.

When Vaughan left, it came as several other cast members announced their own exits. At the time, the soap was in renewal negotiations but it was taking a really long time. The cast was not being given much information. Some actors began to fear the soap was going to be canceled. Some of them didn’t want to stick around only to be told one day that they are out of work. He also had some issues with the storyline direction and felt like a “glorified extra.”

DOOL Spoilers – Closing Open Storyline, Fans Get Closure?

Days of Our Lives comings and goings reveal Vaughan strongly suggested in interviews that were ready to move on. This return might just be a brief appearance to close the open-ended “Ericole” story and give fans closure. It would tie in with Nicole cheating. It gives the couple a reason to divorce. Eric could probably forgive the betrayal with anyone except Xander.
