He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.”

DOOL Spoilers: The Legacy Drake Hogestyn Has Left Behind

Hogestyn was born on September 29, 1953, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended the University of South Florida in Tampa, on a baseball scholarship, and majored in pre-dentistry with a double major in applied sciences and microbiology.

He was drafted by both the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, playing with the Yankees’ farm team until an injury sidelined him in 1977.

He turned to acting, entering a Columbia Pictures talent search that had over 75,000 contestants. He ended up being one of 30 short-listed contestants selected. Hogestyn’s first major role was on the primetime drama, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Still, it was in 1986 when Drake joined DOOL where the actor solidified his daytime legecy. While he was first introduced to by fans as Roman Brady, as the years would go on, he became John Black, one of the most beloved soap characters for his generation, with one of the most mysterious storylines and pasts in daytime drama.

Hogestyn is survived by his wife, Victoria, along with their four children, Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben (General Hospital’s ex-Lucas Jones), and four grandchildren.

On behalf of everyone here, we extend our deepest condolences to Drake Hogestyn’s family, friends, loved ones, and his Days fans.
