Days of Our Lives – Medical Conditions That Give False Positives

It is rare, but there are a few medical conditions that can give false positives, according to the American Pregnancy Association. The tests measure hCG levels in the body, which not only determines pregnancy, but estimates how far along it is. There are conditions in particular that can have normal hCG levels in a woman who isn’t actually pregnant.

One is a blighted ovum, which is pretty complicated to explain. One simple analogy is that “someone built a house but nobody moved in.” Pregnancy hormone levels will cause a positive pregnancy test with this condition. Sometimes, it isn’t even discovered until an ultrasound is done, revealing there is everything needed for a baby to grow, including the womb — except the baby itself is missing.

According to ClearBlue, other conditions that give false positives include cancer and hormonal disorders in menopausal women.
