It was back in 2016 when Jennifer Deveraux (then played by Melissa Reeves, now Cady McClain) had to face her own demons and so much that was going wrong in her life after a car accident that left her in excruciating back pain. She became addicted to painkillers and remained that way for months until her family realized what was going on and got her the help she needed.

Before that, she ended up alone in a hotel room imagining her presumed-dead husband, Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford), coming back to her and convincing her to listen to the Hortons and do what was necessary to put her life back together.

This time, Jack is alive but he is dealing with his own grief and doesn’t see what’s been happening to his wife. Fortunately, Maggie Horton (Suzanne Rogers) notices. But is it enough?

DOOL Spoilers – Jennifer Deveraux Tells Tall Tales

Jennifer finally opens up to Maggie and tells her that she was just thinking of taking pills and that she got one of Doug Williams’ (Bill Hayes) prescriptions filled with the plan of taking them, but she hadn’t yet. Maggie gets Jennifer to throw the pills in the trash and go to a meeting, but we later learn Jennifer wasn’t just thinking of using the pills — she has been using them and probably for months.

“We see the way Chad deals with it. He’s falling apart in his way,” Head Writer Ron Carlivati said in the September 12, 2022, issue of Soap Opera Digest. “We remembered that Jennifer had an addiction issue and it was logical to think that she was self-medicating to deal with her pain.”

When Jennifer digs the pills out of the garbage after the meeting, we learn what is really going on. “Jennifer might say all the right things to Maggie, but doing the right thing might be something different.”
