As everyone knows, he died a few years ago and fans agree that the character could not be recast. Mascolo was a soap legend, a DOOL icon, and nobody could ever take his place.

Fans were excited when it was announced that Nichols would be coming back to the NBC soap opera. However, there are mixed reactions to how his return was played out. He didn’t’ come back as Steve, but as a man who thought he was Stefano.

He did awful things, ordered murders, brainwashed Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn), and was cruel to Dr. Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans). However, the most disturbing part of the storyline as at the end, when he had Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) brain-chipped and nearly slept with her.

Days of Our Lives spoilers reveal that Dr. Rolf Wilhem (William Utay) had bottled Stefano’s “essence” and put it in a brain chip. This allows Stefano to return in anybody, as long as that brain chip is inserted into the back of the neck.

Now, that brain chip will finally be removed by Kayla, but Steve could suffer brain damage as a result. In fact, it takes a bit before he remembers his love for Kayla.

DOOL Spoilers – Actor Studied Joseph Mascolo’s Character

A few months ago, Nichols told Soap Opera Digest that he spent countless days and weeks studying old episodes. He tried to mimic Stefano’s tone of voice, the way he talked, mannerisms, even his body language, and the arched eyebrows.
