Stephen Nichols has set foot back at Salem after leaving “Days of Our Lives” in September 2018. This time, however, he has returned as Stefano DiMera.

Days of Our Lives Spoilers – Stephen Nichols Did Quite a Preparation for the Role

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Stephen Nichols opened up about returning to Days with a twist. Stefano DiMera’s essence is stored in a chip that’s implanted in Steve “Patch” Johnson’s brain.

Nichols was surprised to find out what’s waiting for him. He shared that his “brain went immediately into hyperdrive considering how in the world I was going to do it.”

Nichols studied Joe Mascolo, who played Stefano DiMera, from how he laughs to how he interacts with the ladies and his children to how he carries himself.

“I watched the master, Joe Mascolo. I got lots of videos of Stefano. Stefano in every mode: Manipulating, laughing, Stefano with the ladies, with his children and, of course, Stefano raging. I also looked at scenes with his interactions with characters I would be playing opposite. Also, Joe and I had worked together over the years,” Nichols shared.

DOOL Spoilers – A Daunting Task

Admittedly, Nichols felt that taking up the role is pretty much daunting. It is a big challenge for him to take on a memorable persona. “I knew I didn’t want to do a cheap imitation. I wanted to get Stefano’s essence.”

Nichols had to think of it as if Steve is completely gone, except for his body. He is Stefano as long as the chip is in his brain.

“The only times Steve was even remotely present were moments when he is with Kayla and he is not conscious of it, but a psychic, spiritual connection is there. Something almost imperceptible was what I was going for,” he revealed.
