After Sarah disappeared, Xander was heartbroken, spent all his time drinking and reverted back to his old ways.

Meanwhile, there is Gwen, who has done nothing but torment Abigail DiMera (Marci Miller) since she came to Salem. Gwen is angry, bitter and resentful and fans have never seen her as anything else. Despite her troubled childhood and traumatic experiences, viewers do not sympathize with Gwen.

Days of Our Lives spoilers reveal that Xander tried to help Gwen by dealing with Dr. Clay Snyder (Michael Lowry), who was forcing her to deliver drugs. The doctor ended up dying from a heart attack. Instead of dialing 911, Xander dumped Dr. Snyder’s body in the lake. When the truth started to come out, Xander told Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) that he was the person dealing drugs for Dr. Snyder. By doing that, Xander sacrificed his friendship with Jack, no longer had a place to live and nearly went to prison.

In an interesting character evolution, viewers are starting to see Gwen actually has a heart. For the first time, she seems to feel guilty about Xander losing everything because of her. Gwen does try to make things right by confessing to her father. The manipulator knows that she could lose Jack forever, but is willing to take that risk in order to do the right thing. Gwen was able to tell Jack half of the truth before there was an emergency that cut the conversation short.

DOOL Spoilers – Villains Better Together

Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, executive producer Ken Corday teased that Xander and Gwen are better people together than they are apart.

“We’re exploring the dynamic with this couple. They’re both not so bad at heart, and maybe will make each other better people by being together. Xander sacrifices his freedom for Gwen’s. Gwen tries to help Xander, but ends up in hot water herself.”
