But Van Dyke avoided revealing too much, noted Soaps In Depth.

However, the actor did explain how his character (dubbed John Doe for now) ended up at Salem University Hospital.

And Van Dyke described how officials “find this old man roaming around the hospital. He can’t remember who he is or where he’s been, anything about himself.”

But fortunately for this elderly man, others at the hospital want to help him. And Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) does her best. “The whole hospital is trying to help me remember who I am,” teased Van Dyke as he dropped clues to his Days Of Our Lives character.

And Van Dyke shared that the mystery senior citizen remembers “little by little.” But the actor also joked, “I’m just playing myself as 97 years old.”

And he refused to give any more clues except one. Van Dyke promised that the character he plays “does find out who he is at the end, which is a big surprise.”

However, the actor revealed that acting on a soap opera required a learning curve. Van Dyke noted that his resume includes theater, movies, and television.

But Days Of Our Lives required learning a different pace.

“Comedy has a pace,” he pointed out. “There must be a sense of timing to drama, but I don’t get it. Comedy, I get it right away. But I don’t know when the beat’s coming [with daytime].”

However, his character managed to include a clever nod to not just one but two of Van Dyke’s most famous films.

First, the mysterious senior citizen mentioned he wished he’d had a flying car. That comment referenced Dick’s role as Caractacus Pott in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

And the character also made a comment about a chimney sweep, a nod to Van Dyke’s role as Bert in Mary Poppins.

However, credit goes to Martsolf for finishing the interview with a reference to Mary Poppins.  And the Days Of Our Lives star described getting time with Van Dyke as “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” That remark referred to the song that Dick crooned with Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins.
