Bob Iger’s November 2022 return to Disney came with the promise that he will safely and profitably lead the company to match and even exceed the future of entertainment. And even though 2023 was the first year in a long time since Disney didn’t come out as the highest grossing studio, Bob Iger still believes the company’s on track.
However, it might not be if there’s internal strife, which is why Disney is fighting to prevent the onboarding of two activists.
Disney Opposes Activist Investor Who Has A “Longstanding Personal Agenda” Against CEO Bob Iger
For the marvelous work Bob Iger is doing at Disney, he’s received compensation totaling about $31.6 million for the company’s fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30. To keep doing it, he would love the company to not stir up internal drama that might distract him from his work.
For this year’s annual shareholder meeting, Disney has decided to publicly come out and say that the company would be better off without activists Nelson Peltz and James Rasulo.
Former Disney executive and shareholder, Ike Perlmutter, supported Peltz when he launched a proxy battle last year.
However, he gracefully bowed out when Iger announced a sweeping restructuring. This time round, it seems Peltz is ready to follow through with it. This led Disney to specifically accuse Perlmutter of having a “longstanding personal agenda against” Iger.
Iger, himself, has once warned that he can’t reasonably handle drama and do his job right at the same time.
“It’s not like we’ve got a number of empty seats — ‘Come on in join the Disney board. Have fun’,” a somewhat irritated Iger said at a conference in November, adding that it was his wish to be kept out of the whole drama so he can focus in his job. “Don’t force me to take my eye off the ball and lose focus in terms of managing the company,” he said. Shareholder votes will decide who joins the board.
