Ron DeSantis Warns Disney That It Will Lose “Every Single Issue”

Disney, earlier last week, was praised for the clever way they avoided Governor Ron DeSantis’ attempt to take over Disney’s Special Economic District by invoking a rare legal “royal” clause that involves King Charles and his descendants. This effectively rendered the Reedy Creek board, with its newly handpicked board members, nearly useless.

DeSantis, however, isn’t backing down as he promises to involve the Legislature to void the Reedy Creek deal with Disney that effectively stripped the new board of its power. He’s also considering slamming the company with hotel taxes and tolls.

“Come hell or high water, we’re going to make sure that the policy of Florida carries the day,” DeSantis said in a speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan on Thursday night, per Politico. “And so they can keep trying to do things. But ultimately we’re going to win on every single issue involving Disney, I can tell you that.”

In a question-and-answer session at the conservative Michigan college, DeSantis called Disney, the largest single-site employer and buzzing tourist district, a “joke.”

He went on to add that Disney must be thinking that it has pulled “one over on the state.”

“But now that Disney has reopened this issue, we’re not just going to void the development agreement they tried to do, we’re going to look at things like taxes on the hotels, we’re going to look at things like tolls on the roads,” he said. “We’re going to look at things like developing some of the property that the district owns.”

On Friday, during a news conference in Ocala, the Governor reiterated his intention to reverse Disney’s deal.
