On the morning of Thursday, July 13, Bob Iger warned of the disruption a SAG-AFTRA strike will have on the still recovering entertainment industry and advised against it. A few hours later, Fran Drescher, the President of SAG-AFTRA, announced that actors will be joining writers on strike. But that’s not all, Drescher also had a few choice words for what she sees as Iger being tone-deaf and repugnant.
Fran Drescher Accuses Disney CEO of Being “Out of Touch”
During a recent chat with Variety, Drescher heavily criticized Iger for saying that actors should be “realistic” and not demand for fair pays.
“I found them terribly repugnant and out of touch. Positively tone deaf. I don’t think it served him well,” Drescher said when asked about what she thinks of the Disney CEO’s comments. “If I were that company, I would lock him behind doors and never let him talk to anybody about this, because it’s so obvious that he has no clue as to what is really happening on the ground with hard working people that don’t make anywhere near the salary he is making. High seven figures, eight figures, this is crazy money that they make, and they don’t care if they’re land barons of a medieval time.”
In Iger’s interview with Sun Valley, the long-running Disney CEO, who just signed a contract to remain in that position until 2026, addressed the looming SAG-AFTRA strike, hinting that it’s very unnecessary.
“It’s very disturbing to me,” Iger said when asked about the labor strikes. “We’ve talked about disruptive forces on this business and all the challenges we’re facing, the recovery from COVID which is ongoing, it’s not completely back. This is the worst time in the world to add to that disruption.”
A few hours later, when Drescher announced the strike infront of members of the group’s national board, she declared that “we had no choice.”
The labor union had attempted to broker a better deal for actors during the past months, but studio heads weren’t ready to respond in anyway that was positive.
