Actors Greg Rikaart and Hilarie Burton have spoken up against Great American Family’s Candace Cameron Bure on statements she made about family programming. The stars were shocked by the former Hallmark star’s statements in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, where she applauded the network’s “traditional” marriage policies.
Celebs slam Great American Family’s Candace Cameron Bure
Actor Greg Rikaart is known for his roles as Kevin Fisher on The Young and the Restless, as well as Leo Stark on Days of Our Lives. He spoke up about the Candace Cameron Bure controversy in a tweet where he wrote:
I wish upon @candacecbure the blessing of an LGBTQIA child or grandchild to open her mind and heart a bit, as that blessing has done for so many parents/grandparents I know.
Meanwhile, besides being an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIA equality, including the right to marry, Rikaart has been happily married to writer Robert Sudduth since 2015. In fact, the couple shares a son together, born in 2016.
Hilarie Burton calls Bure a ‘bigot’
Moreover, on Monday night, One Tree Hill star, Hilarie Burton dubbed Bure a “bigot” on Twitter. This came after stories started circulating about the Full House actor’s recent move from Hallmark to GAC. In her tweet, Burton wrote:
Bigot. I don’t remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. But sure. Make your money, honey. You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank.
What started the controversy over Candace Cameron Bure?
Bure told the Wall Street Journal that she wants to “tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them, adding:
I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.
Meanwhile, the former Fuller House star told the Wall Street Journal not to expect any same-sex couples on GAC Family’s programming. She added, “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core.”
This statement also irritated Burton, who wrote in a separate tweet:
Now they’re just openly admitting their bigotry. I called this s**t out years ago when [ex-Crown Media Family Networks CEO Bill] Abbott was at Hallmark. Glad they dumped him. Being LGBTQ isn’t a ‘trend.’ That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples.
Bill Abbott move from Hallmark to GAC Family
In January 2020, Bill Abbott left Hallmark in the wake of the network’s handling of a commercial featuring a same-sex wedding. The commercial was pulled from the channel but was then reinstated. Abbott then became the new CEO of GAC Family’s parent company, Great American Media.
Meanwhile, when the ad was initially canceled Burton, who had previously starred in three Hallmark movies, was among the celebrities who condemned the decision. She wrote that “the bigotry comes from the top and permeates the whole deal over there.”
