Very sad news for soap opera fans as TV Insider is reporting that General Hospital alum and eight-time Daytime Emmy winner, Anthony Geary, has passed away. The actor was 78 years old. More details below.
Anthony Geary’s Legacy
Geary passed on Sunday, December 14, and his death was the result of complications from a surgery scheduled three days prior.
Geary is best known for his work on General Hospital as Luke Spencer and one-half of the super couple, Luke and Laura (Spencer – Genie Francis).
He started on the soap in 1978 and was on the show, on and off, until 2017. Luke and Laura became a cultural phenomenon, propelling the ABC soap’s ratings during their love story.
The twosome appeared on the cover of Newsweek in 1981, and their November wedding that same year drew approximately 30 million viewers.
As Elizabeth Taylor (who was a major fan of the show) made a guest appearance during the couple’s wedding as Helena Cassadine, Geary, Taylor, and Francis later graced the cover of People to commemorate the big event.
Geary also appeared in a number of films, including Carpool Guy, Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF, and You Can Hurry Love – just to name a few. He also had primetime stints on All in the Family, The Mod Squad, and The Partridge Family, among others. Geary was a lover of the theatre and appeared in over 50 stage productions during his career.
One day before the late actor was to go into the hospital for an operation, he did a scene with fellow GH alum, Anders Hove (ex-Cesar Faison), for an upcoming venture. This would mark his last project as an actor.
Geary’s Beloved GH Castmates
Anthony’s husband, Claudio Gama, recently posted a video of Geary watching old GH colleagues, Genie Francis and Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos), during Benard’s State of Mind podcast. Gama’s caption read, “It really made Tony very happy. He told me, ‘Those are two lovely and talented people, great friends, and I miss them.’”
On behalf of everyone at CTS, we extend our condolences to Geary’s husband, family, loved ones, peers, and fans. Comment your thoughts below and continue to visit us for all the latest news and updates in the land of daytime drama.

You were amazing Anthony Geary….I watched you from the time you started on GH to your very last episode . You will be missed
MISS HIM. I was hoping he would come back just to say HI. I really wish he hadn’t left. I wanted him to stay forever but I know people get tired & need to live their own life. MISS HIM.
Tony was such a beloved character but an even more beloved human being and he and his family, friends, peers, former castmates and everyone around the world who adored him are sincerely heartbroken right now. He will extremely missed.
Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) was my very favorite soap actor. I truly adored him. I loved to watch him perform in the Nurses Ball on GH. He performed every year that he was on GH. He was very talented because it showed when he sung and danced in the Nurses Ball. He was never boring and ALWAYS LOVED by his many many fans, and I, too, always hoped that he would return to GH, even if it was just to say hi, as someone just now posted on here. Luke, we love you! Tony Geary, we adored you!!! Rest in peace, Tony!
I am so sorry to hear the news about Anthony Geary! Like everyone else I was so hoping he would come back occasionally if not for good! My deepest sympathy to his family and friends! Fly high Anthony and I’m sure Jackie and Leslie are waiting with open arms to greet you!
